Well, the day started off great with 60+ riders signing in and heading out from Jim and Shawna's house to the Benton Crossing road. The weather was cool but perfect for riding. Groups formed up with plans to ride varying distances. Some intrepid riders went out as far as Wildrose Summit. Unfortunately, one group had some trouble. Tim Standifer went down hard and injured his head. Kudos to Jeff Rogers and Tim Flynn for first aid at the scene - and Jason who sprinted up to Watterson summit to get cell service and call in the 911.
Sara and Steve Morra have added a new and "Memorial" ride to the ESV roster! The North County area was a perfect venue for the holiday weekend ride and picnic. The road out to Nevada (Hwy. 167) was virtually traffic free with great views of Mono Lake, very little wind and just enough rolling terrain to keep it interesting. A few hardy souls took on the Conway Summit to Virginia Lake climb and enjoyed a good workout. Other than the sprinklers, the County Park was a fabulous setting for the apres ride barbeque and picnic.
Got the BEST nights sleep last night after the pamper pedal! Thanks to all the awesome gals who supported me and lent me the bat girl costume (Miss Amber). Everyone rocked it! Super fun. I am officially addicted.
Sunday April 18th, Earth Day week, season opener for the ESV. Sensing spring had just one foot in the door 60 riders, new members and old friends, rushed to Bishop Park before winter pressed in again. It'd been that kind of year.
"Let's be good citizens out there," our ride director, Barb Phillips advised the group, grown fidgety from caffeine and fistfuls of Barb's chocolate dipped macaroons. "There have been complaints of late from the motoring public. Don't ride three abreast. This isn't a cattle drive."
After reading the circulated email about Tom Pauley's expierence this past cycling season! We as board members, are responsible for bringing this danger to the attention of the club. Allowing that the subject of sharing the roadways with the vehicles that travel along with us, it should be noted that most drivers think they have a pretty good aim when it comes to avoiding road hazards! Which as roadies, we are hazards! Sharing the road is now even more important than ever folks!
