Eastside Velo Newsletter - Mid August 2008

August 17 Sunday: Reverse Century
Meet: Whitmore Field
Time: 7:30
Ride Leaves: 8:00

As a warm up for the Fall Century we do the route counter clockwise, leaving Whitmore Field on Benton Crossing Road and heading north over Waterson Summit, Wild Rose Summit and eventually west on 120 and over Sage Hen to Highway 395. We turn south on 395 and head for home. Please note this ride leaves at 8:00 to avoid the late afternoon winds which make this tough at the end of a long ride.

Feed stations are located on Wild Rose and at the base of Sage Hen with a lunch stop at Mono Mills, which is on the west side of the summit of the Sage Hen climb. It’s possible to turn around at Wild Rose and call it good at about 40 miles, or go on to the Lunch Stop of the Fall Century and leave a car for an easy trip home. Others will coordinate with one another and leave a car at the junction of 120 and 395 to make a 75 mile ride. The whole grand boucle is 95 miles. It’s a big hand-full but it’s a fun way to do this route and it makes for an easy Fall Century 3 weeks later.

How long does take to do this ride? The best in our club can do this in four and a half hours, pretty strong riders around 5 hours, most do it in about 6 hours and if it's your first century ride it could be 7 to 8 hours. If your computer has an average speed function then take a look at that. A lot of people ride in the 12-15 mph average speed zone so that means 6.5 to 8.0 hours.

Sign up deadline is August 13. Shirley Seydel hosts the ride. Please be sure to sign up in a timely manner for this ride, since resources will be spread over 100 miles of Mono County, and once we are out there it's pretty hard to suddenly come up with more food or water. Shirley's email is: shirley@footloosesports.com. It’s also a good time to make sure you have a spare inner tube in your bike bag and that your tires are in good shape. Has it been more than a year since you had a new tube? Could be time to replace. See you on the ride!

High Sierra Fall Century September 6
Our signature event is just 4 weeks away and it is not too late to adjust you riding schedule to get in shape to make one of the options, the 35, 50 or full 100 mile loop. The event is well catered by several organizations in town and with some 700 to 900 riders out on the road it becomes a festival of cycling as well as a personal milestone of the season. Sign up at http://www.fallcentury.org/ . The 100 mile option is $50 and the other two options are $40. After August 24 the entry fee for the ride increases, so take action now.

If you would like to help Eastside Velo as one of the sponsoring clubs, you can email to John and Lynette Armstrong ( jala@gte.net) to volunteer and receive a free entry for your work and time. We have positions available September 4, 5, 6 & 7. Work assignments include organizing food for the feed stations at Canyon Lodge, delivering supplies on Friday afternoon around the course, parking cars early Saturday morning before the ride, and cleaning up at Canyon Lodge on Sunday morning. We could use some more help, if you can find 3 hours out of your schedule. Thanks.

High Sierra Fall Century Stuffing Party

Lee Vining - Sage Hen Ride Sunday August 3
Thanks to Tony Taylor for hosting this ride which was held on a beautiful Sunday morning recently. Tony is a new ride organizer for the club and he did a great job in taking care of us all at the start and finish of the ride. Thanks again Tony. We had approximately 45 riders make the scenic loop out to Sage Hen Summit and return, followed by a casual lunch at the Whoa Nelli Deli in Lee Vining. The return to Mammoth was surprising for the Sherwin Lakes fire which flared up that day and consumed our attention for the next week or so.

It’s August!
There are lots of people in town and it is time for total vigilance as a bike rider. All kinds of people are enjoying the Eastern Sierra and they unexpectedly feel the urge to pull out all of a sudden, turn without indicating their intention, and are compelled to suddenly open their car doors and run out into the wilderness. As a cyclist, all of these things are hazardous to our health and we need to pay attention and steer a wary course. Remember to ride single file when there is traffic, signal obstacles to your fellow riders and keep your bike in good condition for the road.

See you on the road.
