Thanks for the Reverse Century!
Shirley Seydel, Jodelle Aas, Corty Lawrence, Wes Fahey, Jerry Kelly and Doug from Footloose put on a wonderful ride August 17 for 62 intrepid and convivial ESV members as they warmed up for this Saturday’s main event, the Sierra Fall Century. The route is more difficult in many riders’ opinion in this direction due to the 10 mile climb up Sagehen Summit from the eastern side. No worries for our gang however, and in spite of heat everyone made it, at least most of the way around. Those who did not do the full lap had another plan and several wise riders diverted to the Whoa Neli Deli in Lee Vining and had a lunch followed by a lift home. As in most century rides, the final 10 miles was brutal as an unexpected east wind made it tough to get back to the Whitmore Field. Thanks again Shirley and her helpers for a fantastically supported ride.

Advocacy
In August John Armstrong wrote letters to the Local Transportation Commission (LTC) and staff on three subjects of concern to cyclists. These concerns included the roughness of the cracks in the surface of Highway 120 from Sagehen Summit to Benton Crossing Road, the placement and design of the rumble strip on Highway 158 June Lake Loop, and questions concerning the resurfacing of Highway 203. John also appeared at the LTC meeting in Mammoth Lakes to present the cyclists’ point of view in support of the mailings. The LTC is composed of town councilors and county supervisors and others who work with town, county and state (CalTrans) agencies to develop and review plans for transportation. All members of the LTC expressed very supportive and favorable views on cycling. They indicated a desire to improve the planning and facilities for cycling in the county area, including an intention to involve a cycling perspective on a monthly basis going forward. LTC members include Hap Hazard, Wendy Sugimura, Bill Reid, Tom Farnetti, Neil McCarroll and Jo Bacon. If you see them around you might thank them for their support of cycling.

Eastside Velo Social Night - Tuesday, Sept 23
We are planning a social evening at Restaurant Skadi in Mammoth Lakes, for Tuesday September 23, beginning at 6:00 pm, with a meal served at 7:00 pm. We will get together to reminisce about the summer and the great rides we had in the Eastern Sierra. We’ll recognize our ride organizers this evening, and if any of you have an award, (serious or otherwise), you would like to present then we'll make room for that. One condition - no boring speeches, please. A couple of new autumn rides are in the planning stage and we will share details this evening. See you there.

Sierra Fall Century Sept 6
The Sierra Fall Century (http://www.fallcentury.org) is September 6th. Thank you to many members who are volunteering to help make this event a successful one. Your time and energy is much appreciated. The volunteer list is now full and only those names on the list will be entitled to a free entry to the ride. The weather forecast is looking very favorable next weekend so this could be the day for you to try this ride. You can always ride the 50 mile option which is from the Whitmore Ball fields to Wildrose and back. There is also a 30 mile option to Watterson and back. You can sign up at Footloose for the ride Wednesday thru Friday Sept 5th, and also the morning of the ride out at the Whitmore ball field.

See you on the road,

John and Lynette Armstrong
